Nothing collected on its own
Emura has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. It sends us nothing by itself: the only things that reach us are a problem report or an email, when you choose to send one. Your games, saves, save states, settings and play time stay on your device, and, if you support Emura, in your own iCloud account.
iCloud
If you support Emura, your saves, save states, profiles and console settings (owner, characters, coins) sync through your own iCloud account, so your other devices have them too. They're stored in your iCloud storage, private to your Apple Account: we can't see them. Emura never uploads your games themselves. (If your device's own iCloud Backup is on, it includes Emura's files like any app's, games included.)
Sync happens when you open Emura and when a game ends. When it replaces or removes a save, Emura keeps the previous copy on your device for 30 days. Signing out of iCloud leaves every save on your device. You can delete Emura's data from your iCloud storage in your device's iCloud settings.
Game artwork
To show your games' boxes and screens, Emura asks for them online. These requests carry only what's needed to find the picture: never your games themselves, your saves or anything about you.
- Boxes, title screens and screenshots come from libretro-thumbnails. Emura asks for them by the game's name and region.
- Descriptions of DS and 3DS games come from GameTDB. Emura downloads its list of games for your language and keeps only the descriptions of your own games: GameTDB isn't told which games you have.
- SteamGridDB, only if you add your own SteamGridDB key in Settings › Artwork: Emura asks for backgrounds and logos by the game's name, with your key. Your key stays in your iCloud Keychain and is sent only to SteamGridDB. SteamGridDB's privacy policy applies to it.
Like any website you visit, these services see your device's internet address when Emura asks them for something. Other game details (developer, year, players) are inside the app: looking them up sends nothing.
Permissions
Emura asks for a permission only when a game needs it, and uses it only on your device.
- Motion & Fitness: your step count, turned into the coins some 3DS games use.
- Camera: while a game uses the console's camera, for example to take a photo. What the camera sees isn't kept, except photos the game itself takes: those stay with the game's saves (and sync with them if you support Emura) and are added to your photo library. They're never sent to us.
- Microphone: only while a game asks for it. Sound is not recorded or sent.
- Photos (add only): to save your screenshots and the photos games take to your library. Emura cannot see your photos.
- Notifications: reminders made on your device, such as the one before a free trial ends.
Purchases
Subscriptions are handled by Apple through the App Store. We receive no payment details. Apple's privacy policy applies to them.
Children
Emura collects no data by itself from anyone, children included.
Problem reports
A report is made only when you choose Report a Problem in a game, and goes only where you send it (by Mail or AirDrop). It holds the last 30 to 60 seconds of play (a save state and the buttons you pressed), that game's save, how smoothly the game ran, the screens as they were, your device model and system version, Emura's version, the note you write, and any crash or freeze reports your device made for Emura that week (technical details, nothing personal). Those reports stay on your device otherwise. It never holds your game, your saves from other games or the folder of photos games keep, but the screens and save state show what the game showed at that moment, which can be a photo. The save state and save include the names you use in the game.
We use a report only to find and fix the problem: reports of the same problem are grouped and fixed together as fast as we can, and each is deleted once its problem is fixed. Any left over is deleted after 12 months at most. Ask us at emura.support@icloud.com and we delete yours sooner. The copy made on your device sits in temporary storage that the system clears, and Emura deletes earlier reports when you make a new one.
When you contact us
An email to us is kept only to answer it. Reports and discussions on GitHub are public and covered by GitHub's privacy statement: don't put anything private in them.
Changes
If a future version changes any of this, this page will say so before that version ships.
